Built in 1195 by the Normans, Kilkenny Castle has stood at the heart of this medieval city for over 800 years. It was constructed as a strategic stronghold and quickly became the seat of the powerful Butler family, one of the most influential dynasties in Irish history, who held the castle for nearly 600 years.
The castle changed hands several times over the centuries, fell into disrepair, and was eventually handed over to the people of Kilkenny for the symbolic sum of fifty pounds in 1967. Since then, it has been extensively restored, and today it is one of the best castles in Ireland to visit, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
There is also a personal connection to Kilkenny Castle that stays with Kevin. In 2006, the castle’s grounds were the setting for a military parade before being deployed on his first overseas mission to Liberia.
What Makes Kilkenny Castle Worth Visiting?
Visiting Kilkenny Castle feels like stepping back in time. The architecture alone is stunning: the towers, the battlements, the gardens, but it is the interior that really blew us away.
Our personal highlight in Kilkenny Castle is the Long Gallery, a stunning room with a beautifully crafted wooden ceiling and a huge collection of Butler family portraits of the people who once lived here. The detail in the paintings is incredible and it’s easy to spend far longer here than expected.
We spent almost an hour in this room alone, just taking in the paintings and sculptures. We never knew we appreciated art this much until we stepped inside one of the most impressive rooms we’ve seen in any castle in Ireland.
But our absolute favourite thing inside Kilkenny Castle? The enormous antlers of a 3,000-year-old extinct Irish Red Deer, recovered from a peat bog and now displayed inside the castle. They are absolutely massive, and the only other place we had ever seen anything similar was in the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.
The exhibitions throughout are well explained and easy to follow, which makes the whole experience feel very accessible even without a guide. That said, we strongly recommend taking the guided tour in Kilkenny Castle rather than the self-guided option.
The self-guided tour does not give you access to all of the interior rooms, meaning you will miss some of the best parts. The guided tours of Kilkenny Castle run at set times, so it is well worth booking your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, especially in summer and at weekends. We have had to queue for a while to get in — booking ahead avoids that stress entirely.
Travel tip: Wear comfortable shoes because there’s a lot to see, especially if you plan to explore the riverside walk afterwards, which we highly recommend.

Yes, visiting Kilkenny Castle with kids is one of the best family-friendly things to do in Kilkenny. The castle grounds span 50 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland, with colourful rose gardens, peaceful walking paths, and ample open green space where younger children can run and play freely. There is also a children’s playground on site, making Kilkenny Castle a great stop for families exploring Kilkenny City.
Children under 12 can visit Kilkenny Castle for free, making it one of the best value family attractions in Kilkenny. The guided tour is interesting enough to keep older kids engaged, especially those curious about castles and Irish history, although younger children may lose interest in some of the interior rooms and art galleries after a while.
A fun thing we recommend for families visiting Kilkenny is combining your castle visit with a stop at the nearby National Reptile Zoo. It is only a short drive or 30-minute walk from the castle and offers a hands-on experience, with snakes, lizards, spiders, and insects that kids will either absolutely love or be completely terrified of!

One Day in Kilkenny Itinerary (Or Two Days for a Slower Visit)
One day in Kilkenny is enough to see the main highlights without rushing. Start at Kilkenny Castle, then head to St. Canice’s Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedrals in Ireland and one of the best attractions in Kilkenny. The round tower beside it is a highlight. Even though Kate is afraid of heights, we still climbed to the top for one of the best views over the city.
Then visit St. Mary’s Cathedral, another stunning piece of medieval architecture in Kilkenny. Finish the day with a relaxed stroll through Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile, followed by a couple of pints of Smithwick’s, the city’s famous local beer.
If visiting Kilkenny for one day with kids, stop by the Reptile Zoo, instead of St. Mary’s cathedral
For the best experience, spend the night to explore the colourful streets, riverside walks, cosy pubs, and hidden historic corners that make Kilkenny one of the best places to visit in Ireland.
Two days in Kilkenny is what we recommend, especially if you are a couple visiting Ireland. Take your time soaking up the excellent pub scene and traditional Irish music on your first evening, then use the second day to visit the Smithwick’s Brewery, Kilkenny’s local beer, explore the Medieval Mile Museum and enjoy a leisurely riverside walk along the River Nore.
