Why Are There so Many Castles in Ireland?

Ireland is home to more than 30,000 castle sites and ruins, giving it one of the highest concentrations of castles in the world. Many were built after the Norman invasion of the 12th century as fortified strongholds to defend land and control territory.

Over the centuries, Gaelic chieftains and Norman lords continued building castles across Ireland, leaving behind an incredible mix of medieval fortresses, tower houses, and dramatic ruins.

What makes the best castles in Ireland so fascinating today isn’t just the architecture, but the stories behind them — from medieval battles and political intrigue to Irish folklore and ghost legends.

Based on our own travels around Ireland, we’ve selected the 10 best castles in Ireland that we believe are truly worth visiting for their history, scenery, and unforgettable atmosphere. They are listed clockwise, beginning in Dublin.

1. Dublin Castle – Dublin City

Best for: A 2-day Dublin itinerary, Irish history, and architecture lovers, combining with a classic Dublin city walk.

We love visiting Dublin, and for many travellers, it’s the starting point of an Ireland itinerary. Although we have explored most of the best attractions in Dublin, it wasn’t until last year that we finally visited Dublin Castle.

Located in the heart of Dublin City Centre, just a short walk from Temple Bar, Dublin Castle dates back to the early 13th century. Built by the Normans on the site of an earlier Viking settlement, it served as the centre of British administration in Ireland for more than 700 years before being handed over to the Irish government in 1922.

Today, Dublin Castle is one of the most famous castles in Ireland and remains an important historic and cultural landmark used for state ceremonies and presidential inaugurations.

What we loved most about visiting Dublin Castle was the architecture, especially the stunning Chapel Royal. We’d strongly recommend paying the small extra fee to visit it, as the gothic detailing, stained glass windows, and stone carvings are seriously impressive.

For our visit to Dublin Castle, we took the self-guided tour with the audio guide, but only because we didn’t know that guided tours must be booked ahead!

Best Castles in Ireland - Dublin Castle

What to expect: A fascinating mix of medieval and Georgian architecture, historical exhibitions, elegant state rooms, and stories connected to Ireland’s complex political history. If you want a deeper experience, this highly rated guided Dublin Castle tour is worth considering.

Is Dublin Castle worth visiting with kids? Honestly, younger children may lose interest quickly, but there is a treasure hunt around the castle that helps keep families engaged. We also appreciated the on-site lockers for storing bags.

Allow around 90 minutes to explore Dublin Castle properly, especially if you plan to visit the Chapel Royal or walk through the gardens. After our visit, we wandered over to St. Patrick’s Cathedral before finishing the afternoon back in Temple Bar for a pint.

Overall, we genuinely enjoyed visiting Dublin Castle and think it’s one of the best castles to visit in Ireland. However, if you only have one day in Dublin, we’d still prioritise the Guinness Storehouse and Kilmainham Gaol first. Dublin Castle works best as part of a 2-day Dublin itinerary or combined walking tour.

Practical Information for visiting Dublin Castle

  • Location: Dublin City Centre, 5 minutes from Temple Bar
  • Time Needed: Around 90 minutes
  • Opening Hours: Mon–Sat 9:45 am–5:45 pm
  • Admission: Approx. €12 for State Apartments
  • Best Time to Visit: Weekday mornings
  • Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible

Where to stay in Dublin: We usually visit Dublin midweek to avoid the biggest crowds and get better hotel prices. Dublin accommodation can be expensive, so it’s worth booking early before the best deals disappear.

2. Trim Castle – County Meath

Best for: Day trip from Dublin, Braveheart fans, medieval history lovers.

The morning after visiting Dublin Castle, we took a day trip from Dublin to Newgrange UNESCO World Heritage site, (which we highly recommend adding to any Ireland itinerary). Afterwards, on a spur of the moment decision, we drove to Trim Castle from Newgrange and were so glad we did.

Located in County Meath, around 45 minutes from Dublin and just 40 minutes from Newgrange, Trim Castle is one of the most impressive castles in Ireland and an easy addition to an Ireland road trip or Dublin day trip itinerary.

Visiting Trim Castle felt even more special for us because Braveheart is Kevin’s favourite movie. Film fans will instantly recognise the castle from scenes in the iconic film, making it a must-visit castle in Ireland for movie lovers and history fans alike.

What to expect when visiting Trim Castle: Ireland’s largest Anglo-Norman fortress, complete with huge defensive walls and a moat, entry is only 5 euro per person

Is Trim Castle worth visiting with kids? Absolutely, unlike some castles in Ireland where kids may lose interest quickly, Trim Castle feels a lot more adventurous. We saw plenty of families enjoying the grounds during our visit, and the castle’s connection to Braveheart definitely helps make it more exciting — especially for husbands who grew up in the 90’s!

Allow two hours to explore Trim Castle and walk along the River Boyne afterwards. Because Trim is only a short drive from both Dublin and Newgrange, we think it works perfectly as part of a day trip from Dublin.

Practical Information for visiting Trim Castle

  • Location: Trim, County Meath, around 45 minutes from Dublin and Newgrange
  • Time Needed: Allow up to 2 hours
  • Opening Hours: Grounds are open year-round from 10:00 AM–5:00 PM, guided tours run at scheduled times
  • Admission: Free to explore the castle grounds; guided tours cost €5 per person
  • Best Time to Visit: Weekday mornings for a quieter experience
  • Accessibility: Grounds are generally accessible, but some areas are inaccessible to wheelchairs.

Can I stay in Trim overnight? Instead of taking a day trip from Dublin to Trim Castle, why not stay overnight? Trim Castle Hotel is located directly across from the medieval ruins, making it the perfect base to explore one of Ireland’s most underrated towns.

Wander through Trim’s colourful streets, enjoy a few pints of Guinness in the local pubs, and discover historic sites beyond the castle, including Ireland’s oldest bridge dating back to 1393, the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, and the Priory of St John the Baptist. For us, Trim is one of Ireland’s best hidden gems. Check prices for Trim Castle Hotel here.

3. Kilkenny Castle – County Kilkenny

Best for: Best attraction in Kilkenny, history lovers, anyone combining a castle visit with a riverside walk.

We’re lucky enough to have family in Kilkenny, so whenever we’re in the area we always pop into Kilkenny Castle, wandering its beautiful grounds time and time again. Afterwards, we usually take a stroll along the River Nore, and it never really gets old – Our name is Happy Irish Wanderers for good reasons!

Located right in the heart of Kilkenny City, the castle was built in 1195 by the Normans and served as the stronghold of the powerful Butler family for nearly 600 years. Today it’s one of the most visited castles in Ireland, and for good reason.

One thing we’d really encourage is taking the guided tour rather than opting for the self-guided option. The self-guided tour doesn’t give you access to all of the interior rooms, so you’d be missing out on some of the best parts of Kilkenny Castle. Although it sounds sombre, we like to include a visit to the graveyard on the grounds; it’s genuinely fascinating, and the graves tell so much history you don’t get on the tour.

Kilkenny Castle gets very busy in the summer months, so we’d strongly recommend booking your tour tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. If you’re driving, you can park at the nearby Dunnes car park, €1.30 per hour.

Best castles in Ireland: Wander around the grounds of the beautiful Kilkenny Castle

What to expect: Kilkenny Castle has beautifully preserved interiors, 50 acres of landscaped gardens including rose gardens, art exhibitions, a children’s playground, a fascinating graveyard, and a lovely riverside walk nearby.

4. Rock of Cashel – County Tipperary

Best for: Stop off on a Dublin-to-Cork road trip, best attraction in Tipperary, perfect for photography and those who love the dramatic landscapes of Ireland.

We have an embarrassing confession. For years, the Rock of Cashel was one of our favourite views of castles in Ireland, yet we always drove past without ever actually stopping to go in. This year, we finally did.

Watch the video below as we take you on a virtual tour of the Rock of Cashel:

Best castles in Ireland: join us on a tour of the Rock of Cashel

Rising high above Cashel town, the Rock of Cashel is a stunning collection of medieval ruins, round towers, Celtic crosses, and ancient chapels offering breathtaking views of the stunning landscapes of Ireland.

Once the seat of the Kings of Munster, the Rock of Cashel was given to the Church in the 12th century and is also believed to be the place where St. Patrick converted the King of Munster to Christianity using a shamrock. Much like Kilkenny, we really like reading the headstones on the grounds; they just tell so much history.

Afterwards, we visited the nearby Hore Abbey, only a 5-minute drive away and free to visit, we strongly recommend you make the short trip as well. Kate actually preferred this ancient site to the Rock of Cashel! Just be aware it can get quite mucky, especially when there are cows in the field. Allow 60 minutes for both sites.

What to expect: Without doubt, the most scenic castle in Ireland with a round tower, Romanesque chapel, and Celtic Crosses, and nearby Hore Abbey as a free bonus visit.

🔥 Top-rated Tour Rock of Cashel

A popular day tour from Dublin combines the three most iconic castles in Ireland – The Rock of Cashel, Blarney Castle and Cahir Castle on a day tour from Dublin.

5. Cahir Castle – County Tipperary

Best for: film lovers, families, medieval history enthusiasts, anyone combining with the Rock of Cashel, fairytale riverside walks with kids.

After visiting the Rock of Cashel and Hore Abbey, we made the short 30-minute drive to Cahir Castle. This is a perfect addition to stop and see the best castles in Ireland. Before you go in, see if you can spot the cannonball still lodged in the castle wall, a souvenir from the Earl of Essex’s siege in 1599!

Best Castles in Ireland - Cahir Castle, Ireland
Best castles in Ireland: Visit the famous Cahir Castle in County Tipperary

Built on a rocky island in the River Suir in the heart of Cahir town, Cahir Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Ireland. One of the best things in Cahir Castle was exploring the dungeon below, before climbing the narrow spiral staircase up to the top of the tower for the views.

If you are a movie fan, you will love Cahir Castle as it was the set for major productions such as, Excalibur, The Tudors, and The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott.

Visiting Cahir Castle is also perfect for families with young kids. After exploring the castle, take a stroll along the nearby Fairy Trail beside the River Suir, where tiny fairy houses are tucked into the trees along the riverbank. The easy 2km riverside loop continues all the way to the charming Swiss Cottage, and you can also buy a combined ticket for both attractions.

What to expect: One of Ireland’s most impressive medieval fortresses, a Great Hall with antlers of the extinct Giant Irish Deer, a fascinating audiovisual show, iconic film locations, the Inch Field sculpture trail, and a fairy-house riverside walk to Swiss Cottage.

6. Blarney Castle & Gardens – County Cork

Best for: first-time visitors to Ireland, kissing the Blarney Stone, and a day trip from Cork City.

Located just outside Cork City, Blarney Castle & Gardens is the most famous castle in Ireland. Kevin is from Cork, but we truly believe no Ireland road trip is complete without a visit here.

Built in 1446 by the powerful MacCarthy clan, Blarney Castle became famous when its owners repeatedly delayed handing it over to Queen Elizabeth I with clever excuses and smooth talking. She supposedly called it “all Blarney,” and the phrase became linked with flattery and charm, something Cork people are still well known for today.

Blarney Castle Ireland
Best castles in Ireland: Be sure to kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle

The famous Blarney Stone is set high in the castle battlements. To kiss it, you have to lean backwards over a surprisingly big drop; you’ll definitely feel it in your stomach as you lean back. Don’t worry, it’s very safe, with staff there to guide and support you. Legend says that once you kiss the stone, you’ll be blessed with the “gift of the gab” — something you’ll quickly notice after chatting with Kevin for a few minutes.

Best Castles in Ireland: Experience an Irish medieval banquet at Bunratty Castle

We’ve also attended a few Christmas banquets here, and it was some of the most fun nights out we’ve ever had in Ireland. From the moment you cross the drawbridge and are greeted with a goblet of honey mead, you know you’re in for something special. Highly recommended if your family is looking for a night out of the ordinary.

Built around 1425 by the O’Brien clan, Kings of Thomond, the castle fell into disrepair by the 18th century before being beautifully restored in the 1950s. Today it’s one of Ireland’s most visited castles — and for good reason.

What makes Bunratty truly special is that the restored 15th-century fortress sits alongside the extraordinary Folk Park, a recreated 19th-century village with traditional Irish cottages, farms, a pub, a schoolhouse, and a village street. It brings Irish history to life in a way no museum can.

Afterwards, pop into Durty Nelly’s, the famous yellow pub right beside Bunratty Castle. Kevin recommends the black pudding sausage roll along with a pint. And if whiskey is your thing, check out our guide to the best Irish whiskey brands.

We visited Ross Castle as part of a weekend break in Killarney; our hotel in the city centre was just five minutes away, making it an easy attraction in Killarney to visit. After walking around the castle, we took the kayak tour out onto Lough Leane.

Experience isn’t needed; life vests are provided, and we saw parents paddling with toddlers. If kayaking isn’t for you, take a Lakes of Killarney Boat Tour that departs from the castle pier.

After Ross Castle, we drove ten minutes to Muckross Abbey (not to be confused with Muckross House), which is our favourite attraction in Killarney. The ancient yew tree growing inside is one of Ireland’s best hidden gems and genuinely worth the short detour.

We were also using Killarney as our base to drive the Ring of Kerry. We’ve driven it before, but it’s one of those top Ireland road trips that is always fun to do. If you’re not driving yourself, Ring of Kerry Day tours from Killarney are a brilliant option.

Expert Tips for Visiting the Best Castles in Ireland

  • Master the “Left-Hand” Strategy: A great way to discover Ireland is by driving yourself, dont forget we drive on the left side! Compare rental car options with DiscoverCars Ireland,
  • Look for the brown heritage signs: When driving in Ireland, keep an eye out for the brown tourist signs along the road. Historic ruins and castles are scattered across the country, and some of the best are the ones you discover by accident along the way.
  • The Banquet Secret: If you plan on doing the Bunratty Medieval Banquet, book at least 3 months in advance for 2026. These are bucket-list items for international tours and sell out faster than hotel rooms.
  • The “Golden Hour” Rule for Photographers: For the best castles in Ireland, lighting is everything. Rock of Cashel looks best at sunrise from the West (Hore Abbey side), while Dunguaire Castle is most magical at high tide during sunset when the water reflects the stone.
  • Avoid “Castle Fatigue”: Don’t try to do more than two castles in one day. Each site has deep history and extensive grounds. To truly enjoy the best castles in Ireland, give yourself time to walk the gardens and actually read the exhibition plaques.
