Did you know that the UNESCO site of Newgrange is older than both Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza?
Now that we have your attention to this impressive fact, let’s give a little bit more information about why you NEED to visit this prehistoric monument, before we delve into all the Newgrange hotels in the area.
Where is Newgrange Located?
Newgrange is located near the town of Donore in County Meath, Ireland.
It’s situated in the Boyne Valley, about 8 kilometers west of the town of Drogheda and approximately 40 kilometers north of Dublin.
Tell me About Newgrange
Newgrange is one of the most famous passage tombs in Ireland and is located within the Bru na Boinne complex, which also includes numerous smaller sites such as Knowth and Dowth.
Bru na Boinne represents one of the most important Neolithic landscapes in Europe and offers insights into ancient burial practices, settlement patterns, and ritual activities.
Within Bru na Boinne, Newgrange dates back over 5,000 years, while the Great Pyramids were estimated to have been built 4500 years ago.
This ancient monument is basically a big circular mound with a narrow passage leading to a central chamber.
BUT what’s really mind blowing is that the entrance aligns perfectly with the rising sun on the winter solstice, letting sunlight flood into the chamber during the shortest day of the year.
This suggests that the people who built it had a pretty good grasp of astronomy, marking the passage of time, possibly serving as a ritualistic or ceremonial site.
Inside features intricate stone carvings and megalithic artwork, giving us a glimpse into the beliefs and culture of the time.
A visit to Newgrange offers a meaningful connection to Ireland’s ancient heritage, allowing you to admire the intelligence of our ancestors and experience a sense of awe in its mystical atmosphere.
