Vilnius City Break: Why Visit Vilnius?

There are endless choices of European city breaks so why should you visit Vilnius? Valid question. Allow us persuade you why you should consider this Eastern European city break.

Vilnius is a gorgeous medieval city that unfortunately gets overlooked by the more famous cities such as Prague and Budapest.

Founded in the 14th century, Vilnius is the second largest city in the Baltic states with a population of around 700,000 residents (Riga Latvia is in fact the largest).

This lesser-visited European destination is abundant with incredible architecture in Gothic, Renaissance, and Neo-Classical styles, and you will feel like you are in a fairy-tale!

If you are a fan of visiting a city with a stunning Old Town, filled with filled with charming streets and cozy cafes, then trust us, Vilnius is worth visiting. The city’s rich history is evident in its impressive churches and museums, but beyond its historical charm, Vilnius offers a vibrant arts scene and a welcoming vibe offering a truly unique European experience.

And the best part? When visiting Vilnius you can experience all this history and charm without breaking the bank, unlike some of the more popular European city breaks.

If you have the time, and a sense of adventure, check out some of the best Eastern European city breaks in Riga and Tallinn can be included as part of a perfect Baltic State Itinerary.

Vilnius City Break: The Sad History of Vilnius

The capital city of Lithuania has been occupied by many foreign forces in the past.

However, arguably its worst occupation was in WW2 when Nazi troops took over the city and committed mass atrocities against the citizens of Vilnius.

In particular, the Jewish community lost nearly 90% of its Lithuanian population.

After the war, unfortunately, events didn’t get much better for Vilnius. With the Nazis gone it was now the turn of The Soviet Regime to take over.

For nearly 50 years Moscow ruled under a Communist regime, that was until the 11th of March 1990 when Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union.

These days Vilnius is a thriving city combining modern city life, whilst still holding on to its vintage style.

In and around The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is where you will spend most of your time. There is plenty of choice of lively bars, cafes, and restaurants to hang out and spend your evenings.

Additionally, you have historic sites, beautiful tourist attractions, and even an “Independent State” to explore.

Vilnius City Break: Getting to Vilnius City Centre

Once you arrive in Vilnius (probably on a very affordable Ryanair flight) it is very easy, and VERY cheap, to get to Vilnius city center.

From Vilnius airport to the city, you can take the 3G bus line which leaves every 15 minutes and brings you close to the city centre. This short journey only takes 10 minutes and costs 1 Euro per person.

If you are arriving from Vilnius bus station to the city, then the 1G bus line will bring you to the city center. This also costs 1 Euro, how cheap is that!!

English is not widely spoken in Lithuania, so if you are going to take a bus then be prepared (always be prepared!) and have your accommodation in Google Maps so you know where to get off.

A popular stop is called Zaliasis Tiltas (Green Bridge) which is on the southern side of The Old Town.

*Tip – On Google Maps you can see the routes and stops of buses, trams, and metro lines. 1 – Find the blue bus icon (which is a bus stop) and tap on it. 2 – You should now be able to see the route and upcoming departures. 3 – Tap on the departure you want and it will show you all stops and estimated time of arrival.

The Old Town will be the main locality to explore as most of the mentioned attractions are either in or around this area. So let’s find out what this remarkable city has to offer.

1. Vilnius Things to Do: Gediminas Castle Tower

One of the most famous Vilnius attractions and historic symbols is the Gediminas’ Tower. Standing high and proud overlooking the city you can reach the top by either walking or by the stair lift.

2. Vilnius Things to Do: WW II Jewish Ghetto

In our opinion, one of the most interesting places to visit during your Vilnius holiday is Vilna Ghetto.

Walking through the streets of the former Vilna Ghetto is a strange experience.

These now pretty and colorful streets were once a World War II Jewish Ghetto that was established and controlled by Nazi Germany. Many dreadful events have taken place here during the war.

After the Nazi forces occupied this area it was cordoned off from the rest of Vilnius and turned into a ghetto. It was used as a holding point for the local Jewish population who were then sent to an almost certain death in concentration camps around Europe.

During its two years of torturous mistreatment of civilians, the streets were filled with starvation, disease, and street executions. In the end, the Vilnius Jewish population went from an estimated 40,000 to near zero.

vilnius

Only several hundred people managed to survive, mostly by hiding in the forests surrounding the city, joining Soviet partisans, or sheltering with sympathetic locals.

These days there are many murals, information plaques, and monuments scattered around the lanes and alleys and we highly recommend witnessing for yourself during this unique Eastern European city break.

Entry costs only 6euro per adult. Have you noticed yet that all Vilnius attractions seem to cost 6 Euro?!

Inside you will see not only the earliest gunpowder-firing weapons but you will also learn a great deal about the use of artillery in Lithuania’s past.

These include some of the earliest grenades and mortars invented. Canons from the 17th and 18th centuries are also presented, these were once used in defense of the city.

Regardless if you choose to do the tour or simply explore around the wall, it’s still an impressive sight to behold.

8. Vilnius Things to Do: Constitution of the Republic of Užupis

Did you know that there is a “state” within Vilnius?!

Užupis is a neighborhood in Vilnius, largely located in Vilnius’s old town.

On the first of April 1997 (I wonder why they chose that date?!) the district declared itself an independent republic – The Republic of Užupis. As well as having its own constitution!!

This funky part of town has 7000 residents and nearly 1000 of them are artists! The state has its own flag, unofficial currency, president, cabinet of ministers, national anthem, and an army of approximately 11 men. The army has since been retired!

Needless to say, visiting Uzupis is a must-visit during your Vilnius holiday.

9. Vilnius Things to Do: Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights

In our opinion, you can’t visit Vilnius without learning about its history of struggle and fight for freedom.

For us, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights is the right place for that.

Based in a building where members of the notorious KGB once stood. Where patriotic men and women were executed for the freedom of their country, and so many harrowing stories occurred within the walls is simply mind-blowing.

Once you finish taking lots of photos of Trakai Castle from across the lake, you can then walk across the bridge to get a close-up view of this magical and fairytale building.

Interesting fact – The Duke of Vilnius went to Trakai on a hunting trip, he loved it there so much that he decided to build his new residence – Trakai Castle – on this island.

The cost of entry to the castle is 10 Euros per adult in the low season (October – April) but 12 Euros per adult in the high season (May – September).

We would recommend walking around the walls of the castle as well because the surrounding scenery is just breathtaking.
