Tell Me About Sossusvlei

Let’s start by telling you just a little bit about this unique place before you visit Sossusvlei.

Sossusvlei is famous for its majestic red sand dunes, some of which are among the highest in the world, reaching heights of around 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) and Deadvlei is Sossusvlei’s most popular attraction.

Visit Sossusvlei: The famous Deadvlei

Deadvlei translates to “dead marsh” and, despite its name, is one of the most picturesque places in Namibia

The area’s history dates back thousands of years when the Tsauchab River flooded, allowing camel thorn trees to grow in the region. However, over time, the climate changed, and the river diverted, leaving Deadvlei isolated from water sources.

As a result, the trees died due to the lack of water, and the intense desert sun scorched their remains. These eerie remains still stand today over 1000 years later.
