The Best Route to Visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
There are two main entry points to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall – one on the east side and one on the west side.
While both provide access to the waterfall, we recommend entering from the east side, as it offers the most direct route to the base and some of the best viewpoints of Tumpak Sewu.
To navigate to the east entrance, type “Parkir Tumpak Sewu” into Google Maps. If you simply search for “Tumpak Sewu”, you’ll likely be directed to the west side instead.
Both trails leading down to the base of the waterfall are challenging and steep, so be prepared for a bit of a challenging hike to Tumpak Sewu regardless of which side you choose.
However, the east side generally provides better access for visitors aiming to reach the base and capture those iconic views of Java’s best waterfall.
East Side Entrance to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall: We recommend using the east side entrance to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall due to its stunning viewpoint of the falls and easier descent route.
The entrance fee to Parkir Tumpak Sewu is 20,000 IDR per person (1.20 USD), which grants you access to the best viewpoint of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
When you use the East side entrance, expect a lot of steps on a steep descent. On the final stretch, you’ll need to scramble over rocks using a rope while navigating through flowing water, so choose the correct footwear as your feet will get wet!
Yes, this is still the easier hike to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall!
Take your time going down, hold on to the rope, and you will be fine.
Once you reach the bottom, turn right to head towards Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. At this point, you’ll need to pay an additional 50,000 IDR per person (3 USD) to enter the area close to the waterfall. This fee grants you access to the base, where you’ll be able to experience the full grandeur of Java’s most impressive waterfalls up close.
The spray from Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is powerful, and just like your feet, you’ll likely get wet from head to toe! While swimming is not allowed near the waterfall, you can get close to the boundary area for a truly immersive experience.
Once you’ve soaked in the natural beauty, head back to the gate where you paid the 50,000 IDR entrance fee to the base of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
Before climbing back up the steep paths of the east or west side entrances, take some time to wander and explore the river below.
You’ll find smaller waterfalls and natural waterholes where you can take some time and enjoy a refreshing swim.

The final step is the ascent back up. You can either retrace your steps up the East Side Entrance or choose a different view by exiting through the West Side Entrance.
Keep in mind, though, that the West Side Entrance involves climbing several steep ladders on your way up. If you have a fear of heights this may not be the best route to take when visiting Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.
Regardless of your choice, both exits are steep, tough going, and will surely get your heart pumping! Just take your time and you will be fine.
West Side Entrance to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall: The main difference between the West Side Entrance and the East Side Entrance of Tumpak Sewu is the cost.
On the west side, you’ll only need to pay a 50,000 IDR entry fee, as there is no official viewing platform of the falls that charges an additional 20,000 IDR.
However, the descent from the west side involves climbing down a series of ladders, which can be more challenging and less stable than the steps on the east side.
This route can be particularly difficult in wet conditions or for those with a fear of heights, so be sure to consider your comfort level before choosing the West Side Entrance to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall.

Hiring a guide for Tumpak Sewu Waterfall isn’t mandatory, as the main trail is fairly easy to follow on your own.

Is Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Family-Friendly?
Tumpak Sewu Waterfall can be family-friendly – but with some important considerations.
The viewing platform at the top (accessible via the East Side Entrance) is suitable for visitors of all ages, including families with young children or those who prefer a less physically demanding experience. It offers stunning panoramic views of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall without the need for a strenuous hike.
However, the trek down to the base of the waterfall is not recommended for small children, elderly visitors, or anyone with mobility issues. The descent includes steep, slippery trails, rocky terrain, flowing water, and, on the west side – lots of steep ladders!!
For families visiting Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, we recommend enjoying the views from the top and deciding based on individual comfort levels whether to attempt the descent.
Both sides may be difficult for younger children or those with mobility issues. Additionally, the spray from Tumpak Sewu waterfall can make the surroundings slippery, so caution is advised.
However, many families still visit Tumpak Sewu waterfall and enjoy its beauty together.

There are two other waterfalls nearby, although nothing when compared to Tumpak Sewu waterfall, they are still both beautiful and definitely worth a visit.
Kabut Pelangi – Around 4 kilometers from Tumpak Sewu waterfall, the waterfall stands approximately 20 meters tall. It is possible to go for a swim and is free to visit.
Kapas Biru Waterfall – Only 3 kilometers further from Kabut Pelangi. It is a bit of a trek to get here, but it’s a rewarding experience for adventure and nature enthusiasts. Entry fee is 10,000 IDR per person, with parking priced at 5,000 IDR.
- Mount Bromo – Hike Mount Bromo for free and witness lunar-like landscapes, listen to the rumble of an active volcano and view one of the best viewpoints in the world at King Kong Hill viewpoint.

- If you are visiting Tumpak Sewu waterfall on a day trip during your Java itinerary make sure to bring a towel and a change of clothes, as you will be getting wet at the waterfall.
