First on the list of our less famous countries to visit is Oman. We had not planned to visit Oman, but ended up there after leaving Sudan on the day the war broke out.
We didn’t know what to expect from Oman, especially since we hadn’t researched the country much before arriving—given the circumstances, it was simply the cheapest flight from Sudan. However, we were pleasantly surprised.
In our opinion, Oman is an adventurer’s paradise and an outdoor haven with endless hikes and wadis to explore and enjoy.
Combine this with its rich culture, of ancient forts and vibrant souks. Oman makes our list of less famous countries to visit due to its unique blend of tranquillity and adventure, that we feel is sure to suit every traveler.
#2 Less Famous Countries to Visit – Estonia
We visited the Baltic States, but it was Estonia that truly stood out for us. In fact, so much so that its capital, Tallinn, has earned the top spot on our list of the most beautiful European cities.
Our experience in Tallinn felt like stepping into a magical fairy tale, with its medieval charm. Visiting in winter only enhanced this enchanting atmosphere, as the snow added an extra layer of magic to this lesser-known country.

Namibia held the top spot for the best landscapes for a long time. Keep reading to discover which country has now surpassed it.

Think all the beauty of the Greek islands without the hefty price tag and crowds – now that’s what we are looking for!
Not only will you get natural beauty by visiting this lesser-known country but Albania’s rich history can be seen in its ancient ruins, Ottoman-era architecture, the vibrant capital – Tirana, and many charming, welcoming villages.
Additionally, Albania offers a range of outdoor activities, from hiking in the Accursed Mountains to exploring the vibrant cities of Tirana and Berat.

Bagan in Myanmar holds top spot for our favorite place we have ever visited.
Bagan is a truly captivating archaeological site famous for its breathtaking array of ancient temples and pagodas. While you may be thinking this sounds like many other places in Asia you may have visited, trust us Bagan is on another level.
Spanning over 40 square miles, Bagan is home to THOUSANDS of well-preserved structures dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, making it one of the most significant historical sites in Southeast Asia.
We’ve never seen anything quite like Bagan. We spent three full days exploring this temple-filled landscape and still didn’t manage to see everything.
Imagine sitting atop one of these structures, watching the sunrise illuminate a landscape scattered with thousands of unique stupas and temples, each with its own historical significance. The flat plains, framed by distant hills and the winding Irrawaddy River, create a breathtaking backdrop for exploring these ancient ruins.
There is nothing quite like this experience.
#9 Less Famous Countries to Visit – Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan was the first Central Asia country we visited and boy did it set the bar high for our Central Asia adventure.
Uzbekistan is an incredibly beautiful country, deserving of its top spot for the best Old Towns.
With its affordability, rich culture, warm hospitality, and stunningly preserved architecture, Uzbekistan truly feels like a step back in time to the Silk Road era. At night, the family-friendly atmosphere and vibrant streets offer plenty of entertainment.
Honestly, we just have so many wonderful things to say about this lesser-known gem in Central Asia and believe it’s a destination everyone should experience.

We previously mentioned that Namibia was once rated number one for the best landscapes, but our visit to the off-the-beaten-path destination of Tajikistan has since surpassed it.
Did you know that Tajikistan is 93% mountains? This makes it one of the most mountainous countries in the world, with some of the most breathtaking peaks you’ll ever encounter.
What better way to fully experience this landscape than by taking one of the world’s greatest road trips, the Pamir Highway, known locally as “the roof of the world”?
With its endless majestic mountain ranges and pristine turquoise lakes, Tajikistan is a hiker’s paradise and offers a truly off-the-beaten-path adventure.
