The highest of the peaks (700 meters) is often referred to as the “Matterhorn of Namibia” due to its striking resemblance to the Matterhorn, a famous mountain in the Swiss Alps, albeit on a smaller scale.

Spitzkoppe is located in the Namib Desert of Namibia, in southern Africa.

It is situated 280 kilometers (174 miles) from Namibia’s capital city, Windhoek and 150 kilometers east of Swakopmund.

Getting to Spitzkoppe by Car: This is the most common way to visit Spitzkoppe.

From Windhoek, the capital city, you can take the B2 road towards Swakopmund. After 70 kilometers (43 miles), you’ll reach the town of Usakos.

From Swakopmund, you’ll start by taking the B2 road eastward out of Swakopmund toward Usakos.

Usakos to Spitzkoppe: Upon reaching Usakos, you’ll need to turn onto the D1918 road (Spitzkoppe Road), which will lead you directly to the Spitzkoppe area.

Getting to Spitzkoppe with Guided Tours: Many tour operators in Namibia offer guided tours to Spitzkoppe. These tours often depart from major cities or towns like Windhoek or Swakopmund.

Getting to Spitzkoppe by Rental Car: Renting a car in Namibia is a popular option for travelers.

We rented a Sedan car for our Namibia trip.

Although Spitzkoppe is accessible by Sedan, the last 10 kilometers are corrugated.

A 4×4 is not a necessity unless you plan to explore the area off-road extensively.

We would recommend at least an SUV for more comfort when visiting Sossusvlei.

Cultural Significance: The region holds cultural significance, evident in ancient rock art created by the San people thousands of years ago.

Stargazing: Spitzkoppe’s remote location and minimal light pollution make it an ideal spot for stargazing. Our favorite pasttime!

Wildlife and Flora: Despite its dry, desert environment, Spitzkoppe has some unique desert-adapted habitants. Make sure to keep a lookout for various insects, reptiles, and occasionally larger mammals.

Camping and Serenity: There are official camping areas that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of the desert while being surrounded by incredible natural beauty. This was one of our favorite during our Namibia holiday, what a very special place.

The best is to stay at Spitzkoppe Campsite. It’s quite basic but you can find some facilities like a hot shower and a restaurant at the reception, which was very much appreciated.

If you’re not feeling up to camping you can choose one of the nearby indoor alternatives.

It’s recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability.

Remember it’s possible to visit Spitzkoppe on a day tour from Swakopmund.

Working hours – 9 am to 4 pm

Day admission fee – NAD 120/US$6 per person

    • We didn’t even use a tent and just slept out on our camping beds – just make sure that your sleeping bag is well zipped up in case any creepy crawlies choose to snuggle in with you!
  • Clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for hot days. Include long-sleeved shirts, pants, a hat, and a jacket or jumper for cooler evenings.
  • Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy shoes or hiking boots suitable for walking on rocky terrain.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield yourself from the intense desert sun.
  • Water and Hydration: Carry plenty of water, especially during hikes or explorations. It is vital to stay hydrated, especially in such dry desert conditions.
    • It is possible to buy water at the small shop near reception but it is always smart to be prepared with your own as well.
  • First Aid Kit: Pack a basic first aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any necessary personal medications.
  • Navigation and Maps: A map, GPS device, or a navigation app on your phone can be helpful, especially if you plan to explore off the beaten path.
