From the top of Bukit Selong, aka Selong Hill, you can also see the entire town of Sembalun which we felt looked like an “Indonesian Florence” with the striking view of the multitude of Mosques standing out against above the village below them.

However, here are some general directions to the viewpoint if you get lost:

From the Rinjani National Park Office, follow the main road south and turn left just after “Putra Sembalun Homestay”. Keep walking until you cross a small bridge over a river and through the bamboo forest until you arrive at a small village.

From here, you can already see some of the rice fields, the viewpoint is the small hill just forward from the village.

There are two viewpoints that overlook the rice fields – Tangkok Hill Sembalun (see map above) is at a lower level with just as great views (this is the one we went to) and the other, Bukit Selong viewpoint, is further up the hill where you’ll see a handcrafted wooden star on bamboo stilts that makes for a great photo.

How Do I Get to Bukit Selong Viewpoint?

You will have noticed during your Lombok itinerary that the roads in Lombok are in excellent condition all the way around the island. So why not hit the road and experience all the viewpoints, secluded beaches and tropical forests for yourself at your own pace.

It doesn’t get better than this and there’s no better way to truly delve into the island of Lombok.

We rented a scooter for 4 days. This will cost you between 70-80k IDR/4-5 Euro per day.

We based ourselves in Senggigi with a one-day trip to Kuta/Bukit Merese and then an overnight stay to North/East Lombok to visit Bukit Selong viewpoint and Sendang Giles and Tiu Kelep waterfalls.

With such a stunning, rugged island soaked in natural beauty we found ourselves stopping off on so many occasions for photos or simply just to take it all in.

We stopped off in local villages, ate in local restaurants and shopped in local shops – the time and freedom of having our own transport is unbeatable.

If you don’t drive a scooter yourself we witnessed plenty of people who hired a Lombok local to drive them around the island on a scooter (or in a car), so don’t worry, you will still get the Lombok road trip experience.

We really wouldn’t even call it a hike. The viewing platform is situated just a short 10 minute walk from the car park. The trail is uphill, yet very manageable.

Mind you we visited Bukit Selong viewpoint during a very rainy day so it was muddy and slippery but we were determined. We visited Indonesia in January (wet season) but let’s just hope you get better weather!
