Visitors can also explore some of Australia’s best natural wonders outside of the city which includes National Parks with breathtaking waterfalls and glowworms that come out at nighttime creating a fairytale-like scene.

What are the Best Attractions in Brisbane?
This list provides the best things to do in Brisbane that we experienced ourselves and would highly recommend.
1. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Kangaroo Point
The name can be misleading, as there are no actual kangaroos to be found here. However, what you will discover is a stunning panoramic view.
From the top of the cliffs, you will admire the panoramic skyline of Brisbane, the Brisbane River, and the iconic Story Bridge.
Additionally, there are numerous picnic benches available, making it an ideal location to take a rest or enjoy your packed lunch.
Visiting Kangaroo Point is a free activity and the best way of getting there is by the many available ferries.
You can catch a CityCat or CityHopper ferry from various points along the Brisbane River, including the CBD and South Bank, to reach the Kangaroo Point Ferry Terminal.
2. Best Things to do in Brisbane: World-Class Snorkeling In Moreton Bay
Located on the coast of Brisbane lies Moreton Bay. There are many activities to do here but snorkeling is the main highlight.
We have snorkeled all over the world and Moreton Bay was very different and unique making it one of the best places in the world to go snorkeling! Bold statement right?
It is the man-made wonderland that is so special here – The Tangalooma Shipwrecks which offer a unique underwater playground for snorkelers and divers. 15 ships were deliberately sunk in the 1960s and 1980s to form a break wall for smaller boats, and at the same time create an amazing snorkel and shipwreck haven.
There are all sorts and sizes of different tropical fish here, beware there can be a strong current here. When looking at the shipwrecks from the beach it is best to start on the left side and then drift along with the tide to the last shipwreck.
Important Tips:
- While the waters around the Tangalooma Shipwrecks are generally calm, it’s important to know tides, currents, and weather conditions when snorkeling or diving.
- Snorkeling and diving gear can be rented from the Tangalooma Island Resort or brought along if you have your equipment.
- Respect the marine environment and avoid touching or disturbing marine life or corals.
To access the Tangalooma Shipwrecks, you can take a ferry from Brisbane to Moreton Island.
It’s recommended to plan your visit in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, and maybe do not go to one of the many Irish pubs in Brisbane the night before if you are planning to go snorkeling…..
3. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Explore South Bank Parklands
Brisbane’s South Bank is an iconic riverside parkland famous for its many restaurants, bars, and nightlife. But our favorite thing to do is visit the world’s only man-made city beach – Streets Beach.
It offers a beach and lagoon area where visitors can relax, swim, sunbathe, and enjoy a beach-like experience right in the heart of Brisbane – for FREE.
Only a 10-minute walk away you will find Queensland Museum. The museum is free to visit with the exception of the Science World floor and the Dinosaurs of Patagonia exhibit. That still leaves 3 floors to discover with many interesting displays.
4. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Hike to Purling Brook Waterfall
There are several national parks located near Brisbane, and our personal favorite is Springbrook National Park.
This stunning park is renowned for its ancient rainforests, awe-inspiring waterfalls, diverse wildlife, and captivating landscapes.
You can visit Springbrook on a day trip or as an alternative option, you could stay on camping grounds within the parks.
We stayed in “The Settlement” in Springbrook and it is a perfect base to explore both. Especially for $7 per person per night!
The great thing about staying in “The Settlement” is its close location to Purling Brook Falls, literally a couple of hundred meters!
Take the 4-kilometer circuit hike in a clockwise direction (Otherwise you will be climbing a lot of stairs back up!) and embrace the falls as you wander through a Jurassic Park-style environment.
Springbrook National Park is located approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Brisbane and is accessible via well-maintained roads. There is no entrance fee!
5. Best Things to Do in Brisbane: The Natural Bridge
Only a half-hour drive from Purling Brook Falls you will truly find something unique! Besides the many waterfalls, views, and peaks there is one attraction that stands out – The Natural Bridge, which is an unusual geological rock formation.
Follow the easy track the whole way down and enter a small cave. Here you will see a waterfall crashing down through the ceiling for a spectacular view and creating a “Natural Bridge”
But wait, there’s more to see! If you think what you’ve already seen is impressive, you’ll be amazed when it gets dark. The darker it is, the better!
At night, thousands of glow worms light up and create a magical atmosphere, like something out of a fairy tale. Remember to bring a torch or other light source to guide you back to the cave.
Once inside, you’ll witness the walls and ceiling illuminated by these magnificent creatures.
The glow worms are not only confined to the cave though. Take lots of breaks when you are walking the track that leads to the cave. Turn off your torch and watch as the glow of thousands of “stars” in the forest strikes your eye immediately.

6. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Visit Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Australia has many famous and unique animals, arguably the cutest of them all is the koala.
The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is a well-known and iconic wildlife sanctuary located in the western suburbs of Brisbane and is one of the oldest and largest koala sanctuaries in the world.
Besides koalas, you can get up close and personal with kangaroos and wallabies in the free-roaming kangaroo enclosure.
There are also other native Australian animals, such as dingoes, wombats, cassowaries, and echidnas. The sanctuary is a destination that offers a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
7. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Climb Story Bridge
Brisbane’s Story Bridge is an iconic sight of Brisbane and often it is overlooked in favor of the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Much like the Sydney Bridge, you can also climb this Brisbane landmark, which takes about two hours and offers stunning 360-degree panoramic views of Brisbane as a reward.
The bridge is close to #1 Kangaroo Point, so it is possible to combine both activities on the same day.
After climbing the bridge you can watch the sunset at Kangaroo Point, and get a close-up of the bridge which is beautifully illuminated at night.
Situated beneath Story Bridge you will find many riverside bars with live music and restaurants to spend the rest of your evening.
8. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Take in The Views At Mount Coot-Tha
If you’re looking for a great viewpoint to enjoy panoramic views of Brisbane’s skyline and surrounding areas, the “Mount Coot-tha Lookout” is one of the most popular and iconic spots.
In fact, it was one of the very first activities we did in Australia.
Located to the west of the Brisbane CBD. The Mount Coot-tha Lookout offers breathtaking panoramic views of Brisbane and its skyline, stretching all the way to Moreton Bay.
The views are both stunning at night time as well as during the day. But to get the best views, we would recommend coming for a sunset or sunrise.
Next to the lookout, you’ll find the Brisbane Botanic Gardens. Entry is free, but unfortunately furry friends are not allowed in.
The good news though is that there are free walking tours available. Or else walk around yourself and find a spot to chill while you wait for that sunset!
9. Best Things to do in Brisbane: The Gold Coast
Located just an hour south of Brisbane, Australia’s top holiday destination is none other than The Gold Coast. This amazing city is perfect for couples and families alike, offering a combination of fun and relaxation.
For those who love theme parks, you have come to the right city because The Gold Coast has 5 to choose from.
It is possible to get a 3-day pass that gives you entry to 3 different parks – Movie World, Dream World, Sea World, Wet’n Wild.
After your exhausting day at the theme parks, you can relax at the many beautiful beaches, where you can bask in the sun, or just take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear ocean.
If you’re into water sports, then there are many beaches to surf, in particular Surfers Paradise. At night, the city comes alive and there’s a buzzing nightlife with lots of places to have fun, dance, and enjoy live music.
10. Best Things to do in Brisbane: Sunshine Coast
Last on our list is the Sunshine Coast, Located an hour and a half north of Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast is a fantastic place to visit either on a day trip from Brisbane or else as part of your Brisbane holiday.
Imagine beautiful beaches where you can chill out and soak up the sun. The popular Australia Zoo, made famous by the late Steve Irwin is located just outside of the city.
