Driving to Airlie Beach is a popular choice if you’re planning a Queensland road trip. From Brisbane, the drive takes around 12 hours along the Bruce Highway – only a short spin in Australian terms! The route is simple and well-marked. We highly recommend breaking up the journey with a stop in Mackay, which is a great halfway point.
If you’re coming from Cairns, the drive is shorter – about 7 hours – and is another straightforward drive via the Bruce Highway (just in the other direction!) Airlie Beach is located around 30 minutes off the highway at Proserpine, making it an easy detour once you’re nearby.

If you don’t fancy an Australian road trip, then fear not, there is a much shorter way of getting to Airlie Beach, and you’ll be soaking in Australia’s best holiday destination before you know it.
Flying is the fastest and easiest way to reach Airlie Beach. The closest airport is Proserpine Airport (also called the Whitsunday Coast Airport), which is just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach. Major airlines like Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar operate regular flights to Airlie Beach from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and other major cities.
