1. Explore Adare, Home of the Ryder Cup 2027
If you’re coming to Limerick for the Ryder Cup 2027, make some time to explore Adare itself. Adare village is best known for its distinctive thatched cottages, colourful shopfronts and historic buildings, and it’s well worth seeing even if you’re not spending your entire trip at Adare Manor.
Take a stroll along Adare’s main street, browse the local shops and stop for a coffee or something to eat. The famous thatched cottages are particularly pretty, with many dating back to the 19th century – dare we say Adare is one of Ireland’s most beautiful villages!
There’s more to Adare than its cottages, too. You can visit the ruins of Adare Desmond Castle and the Augustinian Friary, both of which give you a glimpse into the village’s long history.
With the Ryder Cup bringing visitors from all over the world to Adare Manor in September 2027, the village will undoubtedly be busier than usual. We’d recommend allowing some time to wander around rather than simply passing through on your way to the golf.

2. Stand in Awe at King John’s Castle
Located on King’s Island overlooking the River Shannon, King John’s Castle is one of Limerick’s most recognisable landmarks.
The medieval fortress in Limerick has stood here for more than 800 years, and its position on the river makes it one of the best places to get a feel for the city.
Whenever friends from outside Limerick come to visit, this is one of the first places we take them. Climb the battlements, take in the views across the city and the Shannon, and give yourself a bit of time to explore the castle before heading off to see more of Limerick.
Afterwards, walk across Thomond Bridge towards the Curragower Bar. We love grabbing a table by the river here, particularly when the weather is good, and settling in for their seafood chowder with a slice of fresh brown soda bread.
It’s an easy combination for a first afternoon in Limerick: a bit of medieval history, some great river views and a proper Irish meal afterwards.

3. Explore the Limerick Milk Market
If you want to experience a bit of Limerick’s food scene, make your way to the historic Milk Market. The covered market is one of the Limerick’s best-known spots for local produce, food stalls, coffee and plenty of atmosphere.
Saturday mornings are our favourite time to visit Limerick’s Milk Market. We usually wander around the stalls, grab a freshly made wood-fired sourdough pizza and a flat white, and take our time browsing while the live music plays in the background. It’s a must-visit for foodies visiting Limerick for the Ryder Cup 2027.
Note: Limerick’s Milk Market is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday is the main market day, with the widest range of fresh produce, food stalls and traders. If you have the choice, this is the day we’d recommend visiting.
Afterwards, you can call into the nearby Nancy Blake’s, one of the most famous pubs in Limerick. We’ve spent plenty of time here over the years, and it’s a great spot to settle in for a pint beside the turf fire and soak up some proper Limerick pub atmosphere.
4. Catch Live Music at Dolan’s Pub
No visit to Limerick is complete without experiencing some of its live music, and Dolan’s on the Dock Road is one of the places we’d recommend checking out.
Head into the front bar for one of Dolan’s traditional Irish music sessions, where musicians are welcome to join in and the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. If there’s a bigger gig happening during your visit, the Dolan’s Warehouse next door is a completely different experience, having hosted artists including Snow Patrol, Hozier and Mumford & Sons.
We’ve always loved the atmosphere in Dolan’s, and it’s one of our favourite places in Limerick for a night of music and craic. After a day watching the Ryder Cup 2027, it’s a great place to swap the golf for a few tunes and experience a bit of Limerick nightlife.

5. Walk the Scenic Three Bridges Walk
If you want to stretch your legs between days at the Ryder Cup in Adare, the Three Bridges Walk is an easy way to see more of Limerick on foot. The 3.6 km loop follows both sides of the River Shannon and takes in some great views of Limerick city and its bridges.
The route crosses Thomond Bridge, Sarsfield Bridge and Shannon Bridge, linking Limerick’s historic city centre with the riverside areas around it. It’s flat and paved, so it’s a good option when you want some fresh air without committing to a long hike.
We’d particularly recommend doing it if you have a free morning or afternoon between Ryder Cup 2027 events. It gives you a chance to see a different side of Limerick without having to venture far from the city centre.

You can combine them with the unique limestone landscape of the Burren for a full day exploring County Clare. Kate is from Clare and we have ventured on many dates in the Burren National Park – it’s something uniquely Irish and we couldn’t recommend more.
- Dingle Peninsula: The spectacular Dingle Peninsula makes for a longer but very rewarding day trip from Limerick. The Slea Head Drive takes you along some of Ireland’s most dramatic Atlantic coastline, with ancient sites, rugged scenery and sea views around almost every bend. We’ve explored Dingle many times, in fact this iconic Dingle road trip was our very first date together, although it was in January and snowing – wouldn’t recommend as much!
- Killarney National Park & the Ring of Kerry: If you want mountains, lakes and classic Irish scenery, head south towards Killarney. You guessed it, we’ve spent plenty of time exploring Killarney too! Perfect for a day trip from Limerick, visiting Torc Waterfall, Muckross Abbey and Lough Leane. This is going to be a long day but trust us you will witness some of the best of Ireland’s natural beauty.
- Bunratty Castle & Folk Park: One of the easiest day trips from Limerick, Bunratty is a great option if you don’t want to spend hours in the car. The 15th-century castle and recreated 19th-century village give you a taste of Ireland’s history and traditional life, and its location near Shannon makes it particularly convenient for a shorter day out.
- Lough Derg, Killaloe & East Clare: For something a little more relaxed, head towards Lough Derg from Limerick to the historic twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina. You can wander along the River Shannon, explore the heritage area and enjoy the lake scenery before heading into East Clare for woodland walks and quieter countryside. It’s a good choice if you want to escape the Ryder Cup 2027 crowds without spending the whole day travelling.
- Quin Abbey & Craggaunowen: If you want to explore more of County Clare beyond the big-name attractions, Quin Abbey and Craggaunowen are worth considering. If you’re staying in Limerick for the Ryder Cup 2027, you don’t need to pack every attraction into your trip. We’d give yourself at least two days to see the city properly, with plenty of time to eat, have a few drinks and enjoy the atmosphere.
Here’s how we’d spend a couple of days in Limerick, based on the places we know and enjoy ourselves.
Day 1: Medieval Limerick, the Milk Market & Dolan’s
- Morning: Start around King’s Island with King John’s Castle, one of Limerick’s main landmarks and a great place to get your bearings. Afterwards, walk towards the Milk Market for coffee, something to eat and a wander around the stalls. If you’re here on a Saturday, this is when the market is really worth experiencing.
- Afternoon: Spend some time at The Hunt Museum before heading towards the river. If the weather is decent, walk the Three Bridges Walk for views across the Shannon. When you’re ready for lunch or an early dinner, the Curragower Bar is right on the waterfront and is one of our favourite spots in Limerick City.
- Evening: Have a look inside St. Mary’s Cathedral before making your way to Dolan’s on the Dock Road. The front bar is the place to go if you want traditional Irish music and a proper Limerick pub atmosphere. The Warehouse at the back is also worth checking if there’s a gig on during your visit to Limerick for the Ryder Cup.
Day 2: A Slower Side of Limerick
- Morning: If you’re interested in Angela’s Ashes, join the Angela’s Ashes Walking Tour and see some of the Limerick streets connected with Frank McCourt’s memoir. Otherwise, take a slower morning and explore more of the city centre at your own pace.
- Afternoon: Head out to the University of Limerick and walk around the campus and along the River Shannon. This is one we’d particularly recommend if you want to see a different side of Limerick — Kate spent her college years here, so it’s somewhere we know well.
- Evening: Keep your final evening flexible. Check what’s happening at the Lime Tree Theatre, UL Concert Hall or around the city, or simply find a good pub (there’s plenty!) and enjoy the Limerick nightlife. During Ryder Cup week 2027, there may also be additional events happening around the city, so it’s worth checking the local programme once it’s announced.
Our tip: Don’t feel like you have to follow this itinerary hour by hour. Limerick’s Ryder Cup week 2027 will be busy, and you may want to swap days around depending on your golf schedule. The point is to leave yourself enough time to actually enjoy Limerick rather than treating it like a checklist.
