Halloween in Galway 2026: Everything to Know

When it comes to celebrating the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, there is no place quite like Halloween in Galway. Having spent autumn in the West of Ireland over the years, we’ve watched the City of Tribes come alive every October with fire, folklore and giant puppets roaming its streets.

In 2026, Gaillimh Ah-Boo! runs from 10 October to 1 November, bringing weeks of Halloween events and Samhain celebrations to Galway. The big weekend to plan around is 24–26 October, when the October Bank Holiday brings some of the main events, including the famous Macnas Parade on Sunday 25 October. Halloween itself falls on Saturday 31 October, so don’t assume the biggest parade takes place on Halloween night!

Our favourite local legends, the award-winning Macnas theatre company, are also celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2026. From finding a good spot for the parade to picking pumpkins in Ardrahan, here’s our guide to making the most of Halloween in Galway, including the events worth planning your trip around.

Galway giant puppets halloween in Galway
Halloween in Galway: Macnas’ giant puppets are the highlight of Halloween in Galway
  • Date & Time: Sunday, 25 October 2026 at 5:30 PM
  • Location: Galway City Centre
  • Admission: Free. Arrive early to secure a viewing spot!
  • What to Expect: This year’s production is titled Fiáin (pronounced fee-awn). For us, seeing what Macnas cooks up is always the highlight of autumn, and Fiáin (the Irish word for “wild”) is a proper tribute to that energy. It’s a celebration of the wild elements of the West of Ireland, the creative sparks that have fueled their work for the last 40 years, and that electric atmosphere when performers and audiences completely take over the medieval streets for one unforgettable night. Expect their trademark larger-than-life giant puppets, stunning pyrotechnics, and a soundtrack that bounces right off the stone buildings.
  • Our Top Tip: Because it’s Macna’s 40th anniversary and part of a national tourism push, the crowds will be massive. Shop Street gets completely gridlocked, so we always prefer watching from the end of the route along Father Griffin Road or down near the Claddagh for a bit of breathing room.

🗓️ 2026 Itinerary: The Big Halloween Weekend in Galway

Having visited Galway during Samhain for several years, we’ve learned that the secret to an unforgettable Halloween here is balancing the giant street spectacles with cosy local traditions. Here’s how we’d plan a long weekend, mixing Galway’s biggest Halloween events with a few seasonal favourites.

Friday, 23 October (Arrival & Comedy): Arrive in the afternoon and head into Galway city centre to soak up the Halloween atmosphere. Gaillimh Ah-Boo! brings a programme of Halloween events to the city, while the Galway Comedy Festival offers plenty of options for a night out.

  • What we loved: The atmosphere when Galway gets into the Halloween spirit, with the city centre making a brilliant base for an evening out.
  • Our tip: Book a comedy show and dinner in advance. October is a busy time in Galway, and you don’t want to spend half the evening trying to find a table.

Saturday, 24 October (Pumpkins & Samhain Folklore): Make time for some seasonal fun outside the city. The Galway Pumpkin Patch in Ardrahan is a great shout for pumpkin picking and autumnal photos, while Brigit’s Garden hosts its Howling Halloween activities over the bank holiday weekend.

  • What we loved: Brigit’s Garden brings Irish mythology and seasonal traditions to life, making it a lovely change of pace from the busier city events.
  • Our tip: Check the opening hours and book tickets ahead of time. Ardrahan and Brigit’s Garden are in different directions, so allow plenty of driving time rather than trying to squeeze too much into one day. And bring waterproof footwear if you’re heading into muddy fields!

Sunday, 25 October (The Main Event – Macnas Parade): Keep the day for Galway city and the spectacular Macnas Halloween Parade, Fiáin, which starts at 5:30 pm. Spend the morning exploring the city centre before finding your viewing spot along the published parade route.

  • What we loved: The giant puppets and the thunderous beat of the Macnas drummers reverberating through Galway’s streets.
  • Our tip: Get into position well before the parade starts, as popular viewing spots can get busy. Check the official route before choosing where to stand, and expect crowds around the city centre.

Monday, 26 October (Bank Holiday & Halloween Craic): Start the day with a walk along Salthill Promenade (don’t forget to kick the wall at the end!). In the evening, head back into the city centre for A Thriller in Eyre Square, a free Samhain Community Dance Spectacle scheduled for 6–7 pm as part of Gaillimh Ah-Boo!

  • What to expect: A Halloween-themed community dance performance in the heart of Galway, giving the bank holiday weekend a suitably spooky send-off.
  • Our tip: Don’t be shy — this is one Galway Halloween event where having two left feet is practically a requirement! Learn a few moves if choreography information is available, throw on a suitably spooky outfit and join the crowd. Sure, where’s the craic in watching everyone else have the fun?

🎃 Bonus: If You’re Staying for Halloween Night in Galway (Oct 31)

If your trip extends to Halloween night in Galway:

  • Galway Dark History Walking Tour: Book an evening guided tour through Galway’s dark side, exploring haunted alleys, Lynch’s Castle, and medieval lore.

🚗 How We Survived Halloween in Galway: Our Personal Logistics & Tips

Navigating Galway at Halloween takes a bit of planning. With over 80,000 people flooding into a medieval city centre of narrow streets, knowing how to handle the crowds makes all the difference.

Here is exactly what we did, what we loved, and the hard-learned lessons we picked up along the way.

How We Got Around & Parked

  • City Centre Road Closures: Galway City Council has confirmed road closures for the Macnas Parade from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, 25 October 2026. These affect streets along the parade route, including Eglinton Street, Eyre Square North, Abbeygate Street, Dominick Street Lower and Father Griffin Road.
  • What We Did for Parking: We learned the hard way not to drive anywhere near Eyre Square after midday on Macnas Parade day. What worked best for us was grabbing a spot early at the Dyke Road / Black Box car park. If that’s full, you can easily park a bit further out on the east side of town around ATU and hop on the 409 bus, which drops you right into Eyre Square in minutes.
  • Our Transit Tip: Ceannt Station drops you right in Eyre Square. If you’re taking Irish Rail or a coach like Citylink, book your tickets early though. We saw dozens of people stuck waiting for available trains back to Dublin on Monday evening because they didn’t book ahead!

How We Watched the Macnas Parade (Without Getting Crushed)

  • What We Loved: Shop Street and the Latin Quarter offer the most dramatic, atmospheric backdrop under Galway’s festive streetlights, but it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by 4:00 PM.
  • Our Personal Secret: When we travelled to Galway for Halloween with younger kids, we watched from near Galway Cathedral (near the start) or down along Father Griffin Road near the Claddagh. We got way more breathing room, a clear view of the giant puppets, and the kids didn’t feel overwhelmed by the dense crowd.
  • Where We Warmed Up: Pubs along the Macnas Parade route fill up fast by 3:00 PM. We loved grabbing hot coffees and pastries at a quiet café along Francis Street about an hour before the parade started to use the rest facilities and stay warm.

What We Packed & How We Dressed

  • What We Wore: Galway’s medieval cobblestones get extremely slick in the autumn rain, and our trip to the Galway Pumpkin Patch in Ardrahan turned into a total mudfest! We left our nice sneakers at the hotel and wore broken-in waterproof boots (wellies for the pumpkin patch are a must).
  • Our Costume Trick: October nights in the West of Ireland are cold, damp, and windy. We always buy our costumes one size too big so we can layer thermal tops and fleeces underneath without ruining the look.
  • What We Left Behind: We stopped carrying bulky backpacks during the Macnas Parade. Navigating tight crowds with a huge bag is exhausting, and many venues in the Latin Quarter enforce strict bag checks over the bank holiday weekend anyway.
