After conquering the Mount Longonot hike and spotting your first African wildlife, it’s time to take your adventure to the next level with a bucket-list safari in the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Widely regarded as one of the best safari destinations in Africa (we concur!), the Maasai Mara was hands-down the most unforgettable highlight of our 9-month journey from Cairo to Cape Town.
Imagine this: you enter the gates of the vast savanna, and within minutes, you’re surrounded by majestic elephants, towering giraffes, zebras, and even lions in all directions – all roaming freely just meters from your vehicle!!
Honestly, experiencing a Maasai Mara safari felt like stepping into the real-life version of The Lion King. It completely blew our minds – and we promise, it will leave you speechless too.
Watch our video below to see exactly how we got on during our 3 Day/2 night budget safari of Maasai Mara in the YouTube video below – we are certain you’ll be booking your Kenya safari after watching this!
How We Booked Our African Safari (and How You Can Too)
We booked our Maasai Mara safari through SafariBookings – think of it as the Skyscanner for African safaris. It’s a comprehensive platform that lets you compare hundreds of safari tours across Africa, filtered by destination, duration, budget, travel style (luxury vs. budget), and other personal preferences.
We completely understand and know first-hand how overwhelming it can feel to choose the “right” safari – especially when it’s such a major highlight of any African travel itinerary. We spent A LOT of our time on this!
SafariBookings made the process so much easier by laying out all the options in one place. It helped us make an informed choice that matched our travel style and budget, and we highly recommend using it to plan your own dream African safari.
Make sure to check if you need any African visas before you head off on your Africa itinerary.
Zanzibar: Tropical Paradise in Africa Found
After all your thrilling Kenya adventures, it’s time to unwind in paradise – and Zanzibar, Tanzania is the ultimate African destination to relax and recharge.
Convenient flights to Stone Town, Zanzibar depart from Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city.
Explore Historic Stone Town: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Arrive in the historic town of Stone Town, the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, and get lost on purpose in the winding cobblestone streets of this UNESCO World Heritage town packed with bustling markets and steeped in history before heading to the famous beaches of Zanzibar.

Stone Town’s blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences creates a truly unique atmosphere steeped in history.
- If you are a budget traveler you can read all about the best free things to do in Stone Town.
- Book the most popular Stone Town Tour where you’ll learn about Zanzibari’s history as you visit some of Stone Town’s most historic buildings. You’ll then visit Prison Island to see giant tortoises and do a bit of snorkeling before making your way to a spice farm to see, smell, and taste freshly grown spices and fruits.
Zanzibar’s Paradise Beaches: White Sand and Crystal Clear Waters
Just a short taxi ride from Stone Town, the famous Zanzibar beaches await. Picture pristine white sands, turquoise waters, and luxury beachfront resorts – all at surprisingly affordable prices.

Whether you want to relax by the ocean, swim, snorkel, or simply enjoy the tropical vibe, Zanzibar’s beaches are the perfect place to recharge after all the African adventures so far.
Check out our top tips for your Zanzibar holiday – where to stay, whether it is safe, and when is the best time to visit Zanzibar.
Zanzibar: Home to Some of the Best Beaches in the World
We’ve explored countless stunning beaches during our full-time travels – including seven years living in Mackay, Australia (home to 31 pristine Queensland beaches) – but Zanzibar may just top our list of the world’s best beaches. From powdery white sand to crystal-clear turquoise waters, it’s pure tropical paradise!

Whether you’re looking to unwind at luxury beach resorts in Zanzibar or crave adventure with activities like windsurfing and snorkeling, this island truly has something for every kind of traveler. Trust us – it’s the kind of place that’s hard to leave. In fact, we ended up staying five weeks in this African island paradise.
In our experience, the best beach areas to stay in Zanzibar are Nungwi (in the north) and Paje (on the southeast coast). Both offer a perfect mix of stunning beaches, excellent Zanzibar accommodation options, delicious local cuisine, and easy access to the most popular island tours and snorkeling trips.
Zanzibar Turtle Encounters: Where to See and Support Sea Turtles in Nungwi
We highly recommend visiting the turtle sanctuary in Nungwi and trying some windsurfing in Paje.
Important Note:
Don’t confuse the Turtle Sanctuary with the Turtle Aquarium – they’re two completely different places, offering very different experiences, even though both are located in Nungwi, in northern Zanzibar.
The Baraka Natural Aquarium (Often Called the Turtle Aquarium)
Located near the beach in Nungwi village, the Baraka Natural Aquarium is a popular spot where visitors can interact with and feed green sea turtles in a natural tidal pool. It’s more touristy and can get crowded, but it’s great if you’re looking for a quick and fun experience, especially with kids in Zanzibar.

The Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond (The Turtle Sanctuary)
Also located in Nungwi, just a short distance from the aquarium, the Mnarani Turtle Sanctuary is a more genuine conservation project. It focuses on rehabilitating injured sea turtles and releasing them back into the ocean. It’s educational and less commercial, ideal for travelers who want to support ethical wildlife conservation and learn more about turtle protection efforts in Zanzibar.

Namibia: The World’s Oldest Desert Awaits
From the paradise beaches of Zanzibar, we’re off to Namibia, home to the oldest desert in the world. Namibia is a an incredible country with some of the most unique landscapes in the world that will make you think you are on another planet. We told you we are giving you the ultimate Africa experience!
Arrival in Windhoek and Stargazing at Spitzkoppe
Begin your Namibian journey by flying into Windhoek, the country’s capital and largest city. Windhoek offers a blend of modern city life with a hint of German colonial charm, reflected in its architecture, cafes, and laid-back vibe. It’s the perfect gateway before you dive into Namibia’s wilderness.

From Windhoek, rent a car and set off for Spitzkoppe, an iconic granite mountain often referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia because of its striking, jagged peaks. This remote area is a favorite for hikers, climbers, and photographers thanks to its surreal rock formations and ancient San rock art.
As night falls, pitch your tent and camp under some of the clearest skies in the world – perfect for stargazing away from any light pollution. Most car rental companies in Namibia offer camping gear rentals, and if you’re traveling with a tour company, they typically provide all the camping equipment you’ll need – it’s kind of the thing to do in Namibia!
Watching the Milky Way stretch across the sky in the Namib desert is a truly magical experience and one of our favorites. Another gem from our Africa trip – because apparently, “favorite” is just our way of saying “we loved everything.”
- Read our Guide to Spitzkoppe for everything you need to know before you visit.
Explore Swakopmund: Seal Colonies and Sand Dunes
Next, head to the coastal town of Swakopmund, which feels like a little slice of Germany in the middle of Africa. Founded by German colonists, the town is famous for its charming colonial buildings, cozy cafes, and relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Top Swakopmund Tip: Enjoy all the unbelievable food and even better beer in Swakopmund!
One of Swakopmund’s unique draws is its proximity to Cape Cross Seal Reserve, home to one of the largest colonies of Cape fur seals in Africa. Watching thousands of seals lounging on the rocky shores is fascinating, though be warned – they stink!!
For adventure seekers, Swakopmund offers an array of thrilling dune activities such as sandboarding down massive dunes, quad biking across the desert, and even skydiving for the brave. As the day winds down, make sure to catch the stunning sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, there’s just something very magical about Swakopmund.
- We try to explain more of the magic in our Ultimate Guide to Swakopmund.
Discover the Magic of Sossusvlei and Namibia’s Ancient Namib Desert
Next on our ultimate Africa itinerary, we head into the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world and one of Africa’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
Explore the stunning eerie landscape of Sossusvlei, climb the highest dunes in the world, and let the vastness and beauty of the desert take your breath away.

Sossusvlei is a breathtaking, otherworldly landscape in Namibia’s Namib Desert, where ancient, 1,000-year-old dead trees have turned to stone and stand stark against the striking white clay pan and towering orange dunes, creating a surreal scene you have to see to believe. This unforgettable sight is a must-see on any Namibia itinerary.
Imagine camping in the world’s oldest desert, gazing up at a sky full of stars so vast it’ll leave you speechless – truly (another!) pinch-me, bucket-list travel experience.
If you’re planning a romantic honeymoon in Africa, this moment will definitely be one of the highlights of your Africa itinerary.
- Read all about our Guide to Visiting Sossusvlei to best prepare for your trip.
Bonus Namibia Recommendation:
One of the most unique towns we discovered in Southern Namibia is Kolmanskop, and it even earned a spot on our list of the most unique towns in the world.

Once a booming diamond mining settlement, Kolmanskop is now a surreal ghost town slowly being reclaimed by the desert. Its abandoned, sand-filled buildings offer an eerie yet fascinating glimpse into Namibia’s colonial past.
You can read all about what to expect from Kolmanskop to decide if this intriguing stop deserves a spot on your Namibian road trip itinerary – we think it’s cool!
How to Get Around Namibia
The best way to discover Namibia’s unique beauty is by renting a car and embarking on one of the world’s most scenic road trips.
Or, for a more relaxed experience, book a 10-day Namibia tour with a professional guide and a small, intimate group, with all meals and accommodations included, so you can sit back, unwind, and soak up the beauty of Namibia.

South Africa: Adventure and Luxury (and lots of wine!)
Last but definitely not least – Welcome to South Africa.
South Africa’s incredible diversity – from coastal drives and mountain hikes to wildlife safaris – makes it the perfect grand finale for your ultimate Africa itinerary. Did we mention the sipping on world-class wine?!
South Africa’s landscapes and natural beauty are just… wow. We did promise to keep up the high standards and wow factors.
After making our way from Namibia, we opted to take a bus from Windhoek to Cape Town—a long but scenic journey if you’re not in a rush. If you’re short on time (or sanity), you can also catch a quick flight to Cape Town and kick off the final leg of your Africa itinerary in style.
We spent a week exploring Cape Town before renting a car for an unforgettable road trip along South Africa’s iconic Garden Route, making stops in its stunning coastal towns before wrapping up our 9-month Africa journey in Johannesburg. Let’s see what we got up to:
Exploring Cape Town: Adventure, Culture… and Wine!
Cape Town is one of Africa’s most iconic cities, offering an unbeatable mix of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and thrilling outdoor adventures.

You can’t visit without hiking up Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, two of Cape Town’s most famous landmarks. Whether you choose a challenging climb or a leisurely hike, the panoramic views of Cape Town, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains are absolutely incredible – just look at the views from the Lion’s Head hike (are these better views than from Table Mountain?!)
After your hikes, unwind with a tour of the world-renowned Cape Winelands – including Stellenbosch and Franschhoek – where you can sip award-winning wines set against stunning vineyard backdrops. Go on, you deserve it!
A visit to Robben Island is a must to understand South Africa’s history. This top-rated Robben Island tour includes entry and a guided visit to the island, where you’ll learn about its past as a prison and hear powerful stories about Nelson Mandela’s 18 years spent there.
We’ve explored hiking, history, and wine in Cape Town, making it the ideal starting point for your South Africa itinerary. What’s next?!
The Garden Route Road Trip: Scenic Coastal Towns and Nature
From Cape Town, embark on the legendary Garden Route road trip, a scenic drive along South Africa’s stunning coastline. Explore charming towns like Knysna and Plettenberg Bay and take in breathtaking ocean views.
This iconic road trip showcases the country’s diverse landscapes and is a must for any South African itinerary.

Along this iconic South African road trip, you can also experience the thrill of the world’s highest bridge bungee jump – soaring 709 feet (216 meters) above the breathtaking Bloukrans River Gorge. *Only one member of Happy Irish Wanderers took on this challenge- watch the video!
After exploring the Garden Route, you can return to Cape Town to drop off your rental car and wrap up your South Africa itinerary with a flight home from Cape Town International Airport (CPT). Not ready to head home yet? Keep reading for more travel inspiration and exciting South Africa destinations to explore.
*Optional* Continuing Your South Africa Adventure
If you have extra time to extend your journey, why not continue your road trip from the Garden Route to Johannesburg?
Just be sure to specify when booking that you’ll be returning your rental car to the Johannesburg depot – not Cape Town – as this is a vital detail to avoid any surprises!
This route opens up even more incredible experiences to round out your South Africa itinerary.
Explore the Drakensberg Mountains: South Africa’s Majestic Mountain Playground
The Drakensberg Mountains, meaning “Dragon Mountains,” form the highest mountain range in Southern Africa and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stretching over 1,000 kilometers, this dramatic range boasts rugged peaks, deep valleys, crystal-clear rivers, and spectacular waterfalls.

Hiking enthusiasts will find a paradise here, with trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging multi-day treks. Popular routes include the Amphitheatre hike, where you can witness the famous Tugela Falls – one of the tallest waterfalls in the world – and Cathedral Peak, offering panoramic views over the region.
Along the Drakensberg trails, you’ll encounter ancient San rock art, providing a fascinating glimpse into the area’s rich cultural history.
- Get off the beaten path and hike a hidden gem in the Drakensberg Mountains on this guided hike to Tugela Gorge. Enjoy the convenience of having everything organized for you, including pickup, transfers by air-conditioned vehicle, entrance fees and concessions for the hike, overnight accommodations, meals, and a guide to lead and tailor the route to your experience and fitness level.
One More Safari for the Road?! Kruger National Park
Before flying home, consider adding a visit to Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest safari destination.
Covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers, Kruger is home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including the famous Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo.
Kruger offers a range of safari experiences – from self-drive adventures and guided game drives to Kruger luxury lodges and budget-friendly campsites.
Along with the Big Five, you can spot cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, and hundreds of bird species so whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, Kruger’s unparalleled wildlife encounters make it a must-visit destination in South Africa.
Keep in mind, if you include Kruger in your itinerary, your flight home will depart from Johannesburg, the main gateway city for the park, not Cape Town!
Guided and Budget Tour Options for South Africa
Not keen on self-driving? Opt for a 12-day guided South Africa tour from Cape Town to Johannesburg. This all-inclusive experience covers everything from wine tastings and iconic hikes to safaris and thrilling hippo and crocodile river cruises.
For budget-conscious travelers, there’s also a 10-day ultra-budget South Africa tour that packs in all the highlights without breaking the bank.

What Packing Essentials do I Need for this Africa Itinerary?
To enhance your African adventure and ensure a smooth journey, explore our top travel essentials below to help you get fully prepared.
Pack for Variety, Not Volume
On this Africa itinerary, you’re traveling across regions with very different climates – from desert heat in Egypt and Namibia to coastal humidity in Zanzibar and cooler temps in Cape Town. Rather than packing for each place individually, choose clothing that works in multiple settings and layers easily.
Focus on lightweight, quick-drying, and versatile items that you can rewear and mix.
Choose the Right Luggage
A soft-sided duffel or backpack is often more practical than a hard suitcase, especially for safari vehicles or smaller regional flights that have strict luggage size and weight limits.
Use packing cubes or compression bags to stay organized and save space.
Think in Layers
Bring clothes you can layer instead of single-purpose heavy items. For example:
- A T-shirt under a long sleeve shirt under a fleece will keep you warm in chilly desert nights.
- A light rain jacket can double as a windbreaker.
- A large scarf or pashmina is a multi-use item – cover-up, shawl, dust protection, or beach wrap.
Prepare for Temperature Swings
Even in summer, desert nights in Namibia or Egypt can be surprisingly cold. South Africa can be chilly, especially in winter (June–August). Always bring at least one warm layer and a waterproof shell, regardless of the season.
Sun and Mosquito Protection is Essential
Sun exposure is intense in most of Africa, so bring a good hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen. In mosquito-prone areas like Kenya and Zanzibar, wear long sleeves and pants in the evenings and apply insect repellent with DEET.
If traveling in a malaria-risk area, talk to your doctor about antimalarial medication before you go.
Do Laundry Instead of Overpacking
Many lodges and hotels offer laundry services or have facilities you can use. Plan to do laundry once a week so you don’t have to pack more than 7–10 days’ worth of clothes, no matter how long your Africa itinerary.
*Travel detergent packets are handy if you need to wash things in the sink.
Stick to Two Pairs of Shoes
One pair of comfortable walking shoes (like hiking shoes or trail runners) and one pair of sandals (for the beach or around accommodations) are usually all you need. Avoid heavy hiking boots unless you’re doing serious trekking.
Be Airport-Savvy
Domestic and bush flights often have strict luggage restrictions. Always pack your essentials – documents, electronics, medication, and a change of clothes – in your carry-on in case your checked bag is delayed or lost.
Stay Connected, but Be Flexible
Internet and mobile coverage can vary widely. Consider a local SIM card or this trusted eSIM service if you want mobile data throughout your Africa trip. Otherwise, rely on hotel Wi-Fi and offline maps or apps.
Power banks and offline entertainment (like downloaded maps and books) are useful when traveling in areas with unreliable electricity or internet.
Respect Local Culture and Laws
Some areas – like Zanzibar and Egypt – are predominantly Muslim and tend to be more conservative, especially outside of tourist areas. It’s respectful to dress modestly in these regions by covering your shoulders and knees.
Extra Africa packing essentials:
All of the products mentioned below have been owned and are used by us. Most importantly, these travel accessories are practical, durable, affordable, and perfect for all types of traveler.
- Multi Travel Adapter – With a universal travel adapter, you’ll be equipped to handle any plug type in the world.
- Dry-Bag – Protect your belongings for those beach/dessert adventure days.
- Bum Bag – Protect all your belongings such as money and ATM cards.
- Battery Pack – this travel gadget lets you recharge your electronic devices such as phones, tablets, or cameras.
- A packable lightweight jacket – Visiting Africa can get quite cold.
- Shemagh – A traditional Middle Eastern scarf also known as a keffiyeh, that protects you from the sun.
- Booney Hat – Don’t forget a booney hat to protect from the sun.
Enjoy the Perfect Africa Itinerary!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this Africa itinerary or if you’re planning to visit Africa. Perhaps you’ve done it all before, in that case tell us all about your African adventure.
Yes, of course, it is a lot to see in a short time, but even though it is a quick pace, it is possible. We took Kate’s parents to eight different countries in Asia in one month, bringing them to all of our favorite attractions in Asia, and they absolutely loved it!
