One of the most beautiful towns in Ireland, there are many great attractions to visit in Cobh, and this guide has everything you need to know, such as the free things to do in Cobh, the best pubs for music, where to go for breakfast, whether the guided tours are worth it, and where to stay in Cobh.
Located in Cork Harbour, Cobh is known for its colourful houses, St Colman’s Cathedral, Titanic history, and stunning harbour views. There are plenty of great things to do in Cobh, from historic landmarks to scenic viewpoints.
Why trust us? Because Kevin from Happy Irish Wanderers didn’t just visit Cobh, he grew up here, and he knows all the best attractions in Cobh and local gems that most tourists miss, so you’re getting the insider’s guide straight from someone who truly knows the town.
Best Time to Visit Cobh, Ireland
Honestly, there’s never really a bad time to visit Cobh. If you’re asking me as a local, I’d say May and September are great if you prefer fewer crowds. The weather is still good, but the town is a bit quieter than the peak summer months of July and August, when most cruise ships dock.
August is the best time to visit Cobh, when the Cobh People’s Regatta is held every year. One of the big highlights of the summer season, with lots of outdoor music, boats racing in the harbour, fireworks, beer gardens and activities for kids.
Another good time to visit Cobh is in September, when the Cobh Blues Festival & Maritime Song Festival takes place, with live music events around the town every weekend for the month.

How To get to Cobh
Getting to Cobh is really easy to plan. There are three main ways, technically four, if you count walking….. but we wouldn’t recommend that option.
If you are arriving in Cobh as a passenger on a cruise ship in Ireland’s only dedicated cruise terminal, then you might be thinking about a day trip to one of Ireland’s most popular attractions, such as Blarney Castle.
In my opinion, Blarney Castle is overrated, and cruise stops in Cobh are very short. Instead, I’d encourage you to stay right here in Cobh, wander the colourful streets and enjoy the town you’ve actually arrived in, trust me, it’ll be far more rewarding.
By car: Travelling by car is one of the easiest ways to visit Cobh, particularly for a flexible day trip. The drive from Cork Airport/Cork City to Cobh takes less than 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
From the Ring of Kerry or Cork Airport, follow the N25 dual carriageway in the direction of Cobh/Midleton/Waterford and take the exit at Junction 3. From there, clear road signage will guide you directly into Cobh town centre.
Dublin to Cobh takes around three hours via the M7 motorway, which includes two toll sections.
Is there free parking in Cobh? – The Five Foot Way Car Park has free parking in Cobh and is only a five-minute walk into town.
If you’re travelling in a van or motorhome and planning to stay overnight, there are fresh water and toilet waste disposal facilities on site. An overnight stay at the Five Foot Way Car Park costs just €10. With its seafront location and on-site facilities, it’s one of the best places to stay in Cobh in our opinion.
Driving tip – One of the best things to do in Cobh is admire the views. After crossing Belvelly Bridge (just past Fota Island), you can turn either left or right to continue into Cobh; both routes take approximately the same amount of time.
For the most scenic approach, we recommend taking the left turn, which offers beautiful views as you enter Cobh.
Just remember, you drive on the left-hand side of the road in Ireland!

By train: There’s a daily train service to Cobh from Kent Station Cork, with trains departing every hour starting at 6:00 AM on weekdays and from 08:00 AM on Sundays.
The last return service departs Cobh at 23:30 (11:30 PM), which should allow plenty of time to explore Cobh before heading back to Cork.
The train from Cork to Cobh takes under 30 minutes and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most scenic short rail routes, with beautiful views of Cork Harbour along the way.
If you’re travelling from Dublin to Cobh by train, you’ll need to change in Cork. A day trip is possible if you leave Dublin by 8:00 AM, and the last train back departs Cobh at 7:30 PM, arriving in Dublin at 11:01 PM.
For a more relaxed visit with time to enjoy the best things to do in Cobh, we recommend staying overnight.
Train tip: To ensure you get your preferred train connections, especially on weekends or during tourist season, Booking Your Tickets in advance can save time and stress.
By bus: Another convenient way to get to Cobh is by bus from Cork City. We have often used this option on weekends. Services run every hour from Saint Patrick’s Quay and drop passengers at Parklane/Lake Road, just a short walk from one of the most famous attractions to visit in Cobh, the Deck of Cards viewpoint.
If you’re unsure where to get off, just ask the friendly drivers; they’re always happy to help you get off at the right stop.
An adult day return costs €6.00, making the bus slightly cheaper than the train. The last buses from Cobh depart at 20:45 on weekdays and 23:30 on weekends. Click the link for the Cork to Cobh bus timetable.

The History of Cobh
Cobh, pronounced “Cove,” sits within Cork Harbour, which is the second-largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney Harbour.
If you love Irish history, then you’re going to love the history of Cobh. Back in the day, Cobh was one of Ireland’s main ports, welcoming ships from all corners of the world. It was also one of the main departure points for Irish emigrants heading abroad, especially during the Great Famine (1845–1852), when many Irish families fled hardship and starvation. Over the following century, an estimated 3 million emigrants passed through the port.
Between 1849 and 1920, Cobh was called “Queenstown” after Queen Victoria, who visited the town in 1849. During that time, Cobh was an important stopover for many famous transatlantic liners, including the ill-fated Titanic, which made its final port of call in Cobh before setting sail on its tragic maiden voyage.
After the Irish Free State was established in 1922, the town reclaimed its original Irish name to Cobh.
Best Attractions To Visit in Cobh
There are many fun things to do in Cobh, as the place is abundant with Irish history, including events related to the ill-fated Titanic, the sinking of the Lusitania, and the story of Irish immigration.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, there are many fun pubs in Cobh to enjoy a pint or two.
First, we will tell you about the free things to do in Cobh, then we will tell you about the guided Titanic tours, Irish immigration from Cobh, the sinking of the Lusitania, and the best things to do in Cobh with kids. Use the interactive map below to navigate all the attractions to visit in Cobh.
Free Things to Do In Cobh, Ireland
If there’s one thing better than visiting Cobh, it’s exploring the best things to do in Cobh for free. Follow our walking route to the first five Cobh attractions, and you’ll cover around 4 km in about two hours, taking in stunning viewpoints and some of the best Instagram photo spots along the way.
1. St Colman’s Cathedral
Dominating Cobh’s skyline, St. Colman’s Cathedral is impossible to miss and, without a doubt, the most famous attraction in Cobh.
You can tackle the steep hills if you’re feeling energetic, but there’s a handy shortcut: The Rock Cathedral Steps.
The Rock Steps are located at the back of Pearse Square, about 50 metres from the Rob Roy Bar, slightly tucked away behind the buildings. In just a quick 3-minute walk, you’ll reach the cathedral with only half the effort.

Built between 1868 and 1919 in a stunning French Gothic style, St. Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh is home to Ireland’s only full carillon, 49 bells in total! You’ll also find breathtaking stained glass windows, and if you’re there on the hour, you will hear the carillon’s melodic chimes ringing.
Visiting St. Colman’s Cathedral is free, and you’ll want to allow 30 minutes to an hour to really take it all in. Just remember, the doors are locked at 6 pm, so plan your visit accordingly.
Local tip: We’ve been lucky enough to attend a few weddings at St. Colman’s Cathedral. If a ceremony happens to be taking place while you’re visiting, it’s perfectly fine to sit quietly inside and enjoy the experience. It’s a beautiful way to see the cathedral in action.
2 – The Perfect Cobh Photo: The Deck of Cards
The name of the second most famous attraction in Cobh is “The Deck of Cards“.
It’s only a five-minute walk from St Colman’s Cathedral to the Deck of Cards with many good spots to take in the view at the top of Spy Hill Street.
For the best photo, a kind local allows access to his private property (Magic View Point on Google Maps) for a small €2 donation, and I think it’s totally worth it. If the access gate is closed, you can still get a great photo with a tripod or by carefully leaning over the wall.

Another viewpoint you don’t want to miss is West View Park. Just a heads-up, if you’re coming from downtown Cobh, be ready for a steep walk uphill!
Once you see the stunning view of Cobh and St. Colman’s Cathedral with your own eyes, it is easy to understand why “The Deck of Cards” is one of the best attractions to visit in Cobh.
3 – The Black Railings Viewpoint
One of the best ways to enjoy Cobh is just wandering around – We are called Happy Irish Wanderers after all!
After visiting the colourful Deck of Cards, take a short uphill stroll to Lake Road. In about ten minutes, you’ll reach another free attraction in cobh with a great view over Cork harbour – the Black Railings Viewpoint.
When Kevin goes for a run, this is his go-to spot to stretch and admire the view at the same time. If you see him, don’t be shy and say hello!

4 – White Point
After you have embraced the size of Cork Harbour and talked to Kevin at the Black Railings Viewpoint, you’ve got two choices.
You can backtrack 100 meters and walk down the “Burma Steps” to reach the Cobh Museum and Cobh Heritage Centre. Or, if you’re feeling energetic, keep strolling downhill along Lake Road for about 1.3 km (less than a mile) to Whitepoint, where the views keep getting better, and you can spot the old American Pier, once used by WWI American hospital ships.
From White Point, wander along the seafront back into downtown Cobh.
5 – Take a Selfie With The Annie Moore Statue
On December 20, 1891, a young Irish woman named Annie Moore, along with her two younger brothers Anthony and Philip, set sail from Queenstown to New York aboard the steamship The Nevada to begin a new life in America.
Twelve days later, on New Year’s Day 1892, Annie Moore became the first person to be processed at the newly constructed federal immigration station on Ellis Island in New York harbour. Over the next 62 years, more than 12 million immigrants from every corner of the world would follow in her footsteps through Ellis Island.
The Annie Moore is another free Cobh attraction, and it is conveniently located outside the Cobh Heritage Centre.

Planning where to stay in Cobh? The iconic Commodore Hotel couldn’t be better located, just steps from the Cobh Heritage Centre and the Titanic Trail.
6 – Cobh Old Church and Cemetery
If you ask me what one of the best things to do in Cobh is, I would say take the time to visit a lesser-known attraction: Cobh Old Church and Cemetery.
The “main attraction” is two mass graves from the Lusitania disaster, a ship that was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland during World War I. You can also see a monument in downtown Cobh that commemorates this tragic event.

Other notable graves include the Irish boxer Jack Doyle (a famous son of Cobh who could have been a boxing world champion). An IRA grave, Dr Barry Edward O’Meara, who was the surgeon assigned to Napoleon during his exile on Saint Helena Island, Robert Forde who explored Antarctica with Tom Crean and many victims and stories of maritime disasters.
The Cobh Old Church Cemetery is one of the interesting attractions to visit in Cobh. Allow about 60 minutes to explore. A map at the entrance highlights the key graves, making it easy to navigate. I often bring visitors here, and they always find it fascinating.
7 – A Great Island Road Trip
Several islands sit within Cork Harbour, including Fota Island with a five-star hotel and golf course, the historic Spike Island, and Haulbowline, home to the Irish Naval Service..
The last of the free things to do in Cobh is a scenic drive around Great Island. This road trip is about 30 kilometers and takes one to two hours, depending on how many stops you take.
Along the way, you see attractions to visit in Cobh, such as Cuskinny Beach, Marlogue Woods, Bayview Beach, and Belvelly Castle. Simply add them to Google Maps, and enjoy coastal scenery as you explore.

Guided Tours of Cobh
We will now tell you about the best tours in Cobh that include the Titanic and Irish emigration.
8 – The Titanic Experience in Cobh
On April 11, 1912, the Titanic made its final stop in Cobh, then known as Queenstown, where it took on 123 passengers.
Four days after the Titanic departed Queenstown, the journey ended in tragedy on April 15, 1912, with the loss of over 1,500 lives. Today, there are multiple Cobh attractions linked to the world’s most famous ship.

One of the best things to do in Cobh is The Titanic Experience Cobh. While it’s smaller than the Titanic Belfast tour, it’s absolutely worth doing, and we still take friends here when they’re visiting Cobh for the first time. The tour is set in the historic White Star Line Ticket Office, the very spot where passengers began their ill-fated journey.
During the Titanic Experience Tour, you’ll follow the journey and fate of the 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic from Cobh, and for the second part, you will learn about the last few hours before the Titanic sank. Plan to spend about 90 minutes on the Titanic Experience.
Afterwards, relax with a pint of Guinness or enjoy a traditional Irish meal at the on-site Titanic Bar.
The Titanic Trail
Another popular Cobh attraction is The Titanic Trail. This 1-hour walking tour of Cobh takes you around historic sites related to the Titanic.

9 – Cobh Heritage Centre – The Queenstown Story
Located in the same building as Cobh Train Station, Cobh Heritage Centre is one of the most popular attractions to visit in Cobh.
Learn about the 3 million Irish people who departed from Queenstown (Cobh) to America right up until 1950 because of the Great Famine and economic hardship.
In addition to exploring Irish emigration, you will discover the untold stories of Irish who faced forced labor in the West Indies during the Cromwellian era. And you’ll learn about the sinking of both the Titanic and the Lusitania.
The Cobh Heritage Centre is open daily. From mid-October to mid-April, hours are 9:30 AM–5:00 PM (last entry 4:00 PM). In summer, mid-April to mid-October, it’s 9:30 AM–6:00 PM (last entry 5:00 PM). Adult tickets cost €15.

One of the best things to do in Cobh for families is a day trip from Cobh to Spike Island.

Tours to Spike Island run daily from April to October. However, from November to February, tours are restricted to Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors can choose to join a guided tour or explore the fort, prison, and island at their own pace.
You can reach Spike Island by ferry from Kennedy Pier in Cobh. Your entrance ticket includes the return ferry. Prices are €26.95 for adults and €13.95 for children. In our opinion, Spike Island is the best attraction to visit in Cobh.

The Best Places To Eat in Cobh
We’ve rounded up our favourite places to eat in Cobh, from quick takeaways to juicy steaks and fresh seafood. There’s something delicious for every budget.
Centra – Eating out in Ireland is pricey, so if you’re visiting Cobh with kids, head to Centra. Their deli offers everything from baguettes and croissants to pizza and chicken curry. We love the chicken stuffing baguette with wedges, which we enjoy on the Promenade across from the Commodore Hotel.
Seasalt Cafe & Deli – This cafe is the best place to eat in Cobh if you want a hearty full Irish breakfast any time of day. The beef brisket sandwich is equally delicious, and I’m never sure which to pick. There is also a great choice for vegan and gluten-free customers.
The Arch Cafe & Wine Bar – On our last visit home, we came here at least once every week. Sometimes for a coffee, sometimes for a wine, sometimes for the meat board with wine! (our personal favourite combo). Kate doesn’t eat cheese, but judging by the other platters I’ve seen, I’d say it’s definitely worth a try, with a wine of course!
The Quays Bar & Restaurant – When we’re craving a juicy steak, The Quays Bar in Cobh is the best place to eat, located on the waterfront with stunning views. It also serves delicious seafood starters and mains such as chowder and scallops.
Titanic Bar and Grill – Located in the same building as the Titanic experience, the Titanic bar is another great place to eat in Cobh with fantastic views overlooking Spike Island and Cork Harbour. We love coming here for their classic fish and chips with mushy peas, washed down with a refreshing craft cider.
